  • Final dates for Southern Relays
  • Please note that, after several changes of plan, the finalised dates for the Southern Road Relays this autumn are now Saturday September 26th for the ladies (along with Juniors), and Sunday September 27th for the men - still at Rushmoor.
  • Announcement: Proposed Merger With Team Southampton
  • Further to the resolution passed at the club's AGM the club wishes to announce that it has commenced some initial discussions with Team Southampton to consider and explore fully the possibility of a future merger between the two clubs with a view to forming one combined athletics and running club in Southampton. It is too early at this stage to make any comments on the possible details but following further discussions, the potential benefits of such a merger will be considered by the club committee and if it is considered appropriate to take the matter forward, the full details of any such merger will be formally put to the club membership for consideration and approval.
Further details will be published in due course as appropriate to keep members up to date on any significant developments.
  • BMAF Relays, Birmingham
  • May 16th, Sutton Park, Birmingham. For only the second time this century, the SRC Vet 40 men had a full team at the British Masters Road Relay National Championship, complimenting the much more regular appearance of the SRC V50's. It is no mean feat to get 8 fit, uninjured veterans to commit to travelling 300 miles to Sutton Park and back in a day, but after meeting up at Flemming park, we all piled into 2 cars, which all added to the team spirit that was to shape the day. Building a squad like ours is testament to the breadth of talent we have in the club, and should be a good foundation for the future. Of course having Andy recently qualify for the age group helped persuade fellow runners that we were serious, and brought some class to the team! But a team is only a team if everyone turns up, and despite some better offers (if that could be possible!) and niggling strains, every man counted for a solid 17th place (from 53 clubs that took part on the day) (or, as I prefer to quote, 17th from 1673 English clubs, most of which could not even muster a team!!).

So look out for the names of Dave Blackman, Andy Morgan-Lee, Graham Bungay, Jon Grainger, Paul Johnson, John O'Shea, Scott Augur, and Howard Long at future Vets events. We're looking for an A and a B team in the top 10 at the 4 stage relays at Aldershot on Sun 27th September!!
PS well done to the SRC MV50's who yet again successfully completed the National 6 stage earlier in the day, with a 28th place. Apologies for the lack of photos, but I didn't quite get there to see you running! [From Dave Blackman]
  • RVCP 10K - Thanks
  • Thanks to those who helped for a very successful race in difficult conditions. There were 510 finishers which is a record and I do appreciate the support of members without which the race could not take place. A particular mention to Steve Veal who somehow manages to get everything set up and then goes off to work!!
"Well done, a slick race, well organised." Roger T (Race Secretary Fareham Crusaders) [From Richie Pearson]
  • Southern Vets Athletics League
  • As most of you are aware SRC have entered the Southern Vets Athletics league this season. Only athletes of 35 and over can compete in these events but I would like to encourage anyone else to support the team by timekeeping, officiating or simply turning up to cheer us on. Please let me know if you are interested in getting involved in these friendly events, many thanks, Derek. Schedule [From Derek Warn]
  • Success for Karen Rushton in BMAF Cross Country
  • Karen Rushton finished second in the BMAF Cross Country championships on March 21st. Report
  • News from Russell Coleman
  • I wanted to ask a favour. As we are planning to stay out in Cayman for a couple more years we have a problem in that we cannot find anyone to look after our 2 cats. The friend we have looking after them is moving away and cannot keep them for much longer. They are long haired brown cats and are sisters less than 5 years old. Could anyone who is interested in taking them on send me an e-mail to caymanturtle@hotmail.co.uk.
On another note I have got the marathon bug and am about to do the Boston marathon on 20th April which I am really looking forward to. It is apparently quite hilly which I am worried about but hopefully I'll run a personal best time as I have been training pretty hard. Is anyone from SotonRC running Boston? I will be back in August so hoping to do the RR10 at Hursley.
  • Inter-counties Cross Country, Nottingham, March 7th
  • This prestigious cross country event plays host to the CAU Inter Counties Championships as well as the World Cross Country trials. We were blessed with cool dry conditions, and the testing terrain of the hill up to Wollaton Hall played its part in deciding many of the races. I was proud to be apart of the Senior Ladies Hampshire Team along with 7 other local girls from Aldershot, Team Southampton and Guernsey. The whole experience was amazing, the atmosphere, the course and the supporters. All the team performed to a very high standard in a high quality field. Namely Steph Twell for winning and Emma Palliant finishing 17th. I finished 102 being the 4th scorer of the team. Overall we were 8th team. I had a brilliant day once I found my way there (a few wrong turns). I would like to thank Tony Fern, John O'Shea and Richie Pearson for all their coaching, support and kind words. In addition thank you to all those who wished me well on the day (you all know who you are). [From Nicci Blandford 13/03/09]
  • 2008/09 Road Grand Prix winners
  • Congratulations to this year's Road Grand Prix winners, Graham Bungay and Nicci Blandford. Click the ROAD GRAND PRIX SERIES button on the right of this page for full details. Paul Johnson had the best attendance, running in seven of the nine qualifying events. Eighty-two members finished at least one of the races. [From Alan Tulip 13/03/09]
  • 2008/09 Cross Country Grand Prix winners
  • Congratulations to this year's Cross Country Grand Prix winners, Lynda Massey and Ollie Keppel. Click the XC GRAND PRIX SERIES button on the right of this page for full details. A special mention goes to Dave Blackman, Howard Long, Rod Johnstone and Ollie for running in all five qualifying events. [From Alan Tulip 16/02/09]
  • SCVAC Indoor Championships
  • SRC track & field vets team are definitely out of the blocks! Last Sunday, 8th Feb, a contingent of the upcoming summer's SRC SCVAC (Southern Counties Veterans AC) league team competed in the SCVAC Indoor Championships at the superb Lee Valley facility. For some of us it was our first experience of an indoor arena; for all of us it was an excellent day out and a positive indication of current fitness for the season to come. Between four of us we walked off with 6 medals, 5 titles and 4 huge grins (see photo). Derek Warn managed a PB in every event he took part in, and the club now boasts multiple Southern Counties champions (see results below).

Ultimately, we are aiming at the SCVAC track and field league, which takes place on four Monday evenings through the summer. Again, these events have a fantastic atmosphere, and with much more time to mooch about and chat to friends than at your average 10k or half marathon. Dates will be released soon.

Results from SCVAC Indoor Championships 2009 (for those signed up for the SRC SCVAC league team)
    Michelle Wakefield 200m W40 Gold 30.4, 400m W40 Gold 67s

  • Important info re Eastleigh 10K entries
  • We are living in difficult times, and I'm not talking about the recession. I'm talking about the expectations placed upon us as a "club that organises a road race". The authorities who oversee (and give permission for) road races, including the Eastleigh 10k, are expecting higher safety standards than ever before, which is the main reason why we are seeing the demise of many great, fully subscribed local road races. Either the authorities are advising against races in their current form, or, the running clubs that have organised them for many years don't think they can step up to the new levels expected.

I believe that as a club we can step up to the mark. Like Stubbington Green did 2 weeks ago. But it will need your help on the day. Stubbington did a fantastic job with a marshal at every junction. It will be a big task, but we need to match that.

Please mark down Sunday 29th March on your calendars, and email Malcolm at mc123456@tiscali.co.uk so that he can add you to the list of marshals.

The committee has decided that the Eastleigh 10k should still be open to SRC members. Many local clubs now forbid members from entering their races, but the committee supports the view that we can arrange cover in other ways. Therefore, if you are wanting to run in the event, then we require that you ask a family member or friend to fill your place on the marshals list. Your representative must be over 18, be able to communicate with runners and road users, and have a basic understanding of what it's like to have 2000 mad runners careering past! Please mail Malcolm at mc123456@tiscali.co.uk to let him know the name of your representative, and an address where we can send them some short instructions.

Thanks for your help - without it the Eastleigh 10k would no longer exist. [From David Blackman 28/01/09]
  • Inter Counties Cross Country, January 31st
  • [From Richie Pearson 2/2/09] For the first time, Southampton Running Club had two ladies representing Hampshire in the SEAA Inter Counties Cross Country Championships held at Biggleswade, Nicci Blandford and Hannah Coombs. The course of 6k was relatively fast with a short sharp hill on each lap which contrasted markedly with the mud heap the previous week for the Southern Championships at Hillingdon. Conditions were dry but with a fierce easterly wind. Nicci continued her excellent recent form and was rewarded with the Hampshire team winning the bronze medal with Nicci being second scorer. Hannah also performed very well in a good quality field. Nicci was 13th overall in 23.14; Hannah was 33rd in 25.06.
[From Ian Richardson 6/2/09] Charlie White also ran in the Inter Counties and was 22nd in the Under 15 race. On Saturday February 7 he represents Hampshire Schools in the South East counties event hoping to qualify for a place in the County team for the English Schools Championships in March.
  • Updating records
  • Updating my records. Any women members who have changed their email addressess recently or any ladies not receiving emails from me regarding race/social info, could you email me so I can either alter or add you to my SRC email group. Thankyou Nicci B (Ladies team captain). nicola.blandford@ntlworld.com [From Nicci Blandford 21/01/09]
  • A shy young lady(?)
  • About five years ago I was introduced to a shy young lady from Fitness First, Shirley who was keen to progress a bit in running. In those days I could keep up with her and help her towards those early races. Time has moved on. This week that shy lady finally came of age - gaining a County XC vest and finishing 3rd at a major local road race. OK I lied about being shy, but Nicci Blandford is a credit to the club and has earned every bit of her success with the hard work that has gone into making her the runner she is. [From Malcolm Price 19/01/09]
  • Club success at Hampshire Cross Country Championships
  • [From Nicci B] Well what a day. Saturday the 10th Jan 09. No mud but the hardest ground I have run on due to the minus temps we have had. A good turn out in such freezing condtions. The ladies did their team captain pround by performing so well. I, the team captain had a storming run to come in 6th (I had to run that fast just to keep warm!!) followed by Hannah Coombs, Christine Currie and Sally Diaper to claim 3rd team position overall. Pascale Fotherby, Elaine Goode and Lynn Massey ran to a high standard also over an undulating course that went on for 8.4k. Congrats to the Mens vet team who also claimed a prize with the senior men just missing out even after a brilliant performance by everyone. Well done everyone.
  • [From Malcolm Price] Congratulations to all those that ran the County, 35 men and 7 women. Team bronze for the women (a first county medal), team gold for the vet men, and 4th for the senior men. Thanks too must go to those members that kept me updated about illness and attending; but big raspberry to those members that did neither and failed to turn up. Your race numbers are nailed to a tree near the start at Dibden Inlcosure.
  • Also: the veterans are discussing the possibility of doing the National Masters XC Champs at Prestatyn North Wales on Sun 21st March. An overnight stay will be essential. Is there enough interest to raise a serious challenge for this race? E mail me or call me please. Malcolm
  • BMAF Open Cross Country Championships, Saturday 21st March
  • This National event this year takes place near Prestatyn and is open to all men and women over the age of 35 years. The distance is 6K for the ladies and 8K for the men. Closing date is 7th of March 2009 and entry forms can be found on www.bmaf.org.uk. It's 3 to score for M35 to 39, 4 to count in M40-49, remainder 3 to count. I appreciate this is probably an overnighter but we have a good chance of finishing well up particularly as Andy has told me he has it as a target race depending of course on his progress following his operation. Please let me know if you intend to run so we can organise transport. [From Richie Pearson 6/1/09]

    Tuesday training group

  • Club London Marathon Places
  • The successful runners in the club draw for London Marathon places last night were - Rob Parkinson, Stuart Hicks, Sally Lucas, Mirella Spalutto. Good luck to them all! [From Eryl Penney 10/12/08]
  • Member news
  • I heard today that former member, Russell Coleman, now in the Cayman isles for a spell, did 2 hrs 52 mins to finish 2nd in their marathon. We wish him well in his final year out there (2009) and hope that he returns in the same form when the UK beckons again. [From Malcolm Price 8/12/08]
  • More success for Karen Rushton (again)
  • (Further to the story below, on Sunday 7th December, in icy but calm conditions Karen Rushton finished 2nd in the Nene Valley 10 mile race in the excellent time of 60:37, which moves her up to 30th in the UK rankings for the year, and 7th O/40.)
SRC member Karen Rushton recently ran at the veterans Cross Country International in Swansea. Karen travelled to the event as a reserve for the England ladies team. Although not getting a run in the main race on the day as part of the dominant over 40s team in which England provided the first four runners in that age group, Debbie Walters, Clare Elms Nicki Nealon and Winchester's Karen Hazlitt, Karen was still awarded her England vest and wore it in the accompanying open race as can be seen below. She was first lady in this race and beat not only the other O40 England reserve but both reserves for the O35s and ran a time that would have been quick enough to count for the England O35 team, and to count for any of the other competing nations teams - Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland. [November 2008]
  • Congratulations to John O'Shea
  • John O'Shea is to be congratulated on achieving his Level 3 Coach Standard. The club's coaching capability is continuing to grow and John's elevation can only be good for all the runners within the club.
  • Season tickets to run on the track at the Sports Centre
  • At the last committee meeting it was decided to re-introduce the subsidised season ticket for the track. As a club we wish to encourage members to run on the track in order to improve speed. The scheme works as follows:
Members purchase a season ticket from the office next to the top car park for £24 that entitles them to use the track 12 times for the cost of 10. A card is provided which is marked when ever the track is used. When the card is full it should be handed to a committee member or coach who will arrange for the athlete to be refunded £10.
Initially the scheme will be limited to one card per member but it will be reviewed depending on take up of this offer and the cost to the club. However I would anticipate the scheme being extended to cover further cards. [From Richie Pearson]
  • Club trip to Portugal
  • We are in the mid stages of arranging a club training week in Monte Gordo in Portugal from 19th May next. This will be a training/holiday/social week. Richie and John O will be there to discuss the finer points of training. The club championship table tennis, table football and karaoke competition are all likely add ons.
Fly from Southampton direct to Faro. Not to be missed event. Book now with Eryl Penney. [From Malcolm Price]
  • National Road Relays
  • Saturday 18th October, National Road Relays in Birmingham. After a lot of hard work by Nicci Blandford, the club managed to send a ladies team up to Birmingham for this years 4 stage National road relays. Amy Campbell, Nicci Blandford, Marie Stokes and Hannah Coombs all improved their times over the same course by around 30 seconds each and finished in a very respectable 34th place out of 101 teams. [From Derek Warn]
  • Social Events Calendar
  • The current calendar of social events can now be accessed by following the SOCIAL EVENTS link in the left column of this page.
  • 2008/2009 Road Grand Prix Series
  • We intend to continue with the highly popular Road Grand Prix Series for the 2008/2009 season. Just Run will be main sponsor of the League once again. We have to finally agree the number of awards but I think that 1st in each League event plus ratings in the final standings will be the order. Best five age-graded results in the first nine Hampshire Road League races will determine positions in the overall rankings:
    6th Sept at Overton 5
    12th Oct at Solent Half
2nd Nov at Lordshill 10 (NOTE: Accidentally omitted from list previously)
    16th Nov at Gosport Half
    7th Dec at Victory 5
    18th Jan at Stubbington 10K
    1st Feb at Ryde 10
    15th Feb at Bramley 20
    8th March at Salisbury 10
    [From Malcolm Price]
  • Hampshire Road Race League fixtures 2008/2009
  • Twelve fixtures for next season have been decided and are updated in the Hampshire Road Race League calendar at www.hrrl.org.uk. If any event is cancelled it will be discarded from the league. The league was extended to 12 races partly to allow for a potential increase in the risk of cancellations, due to new Health and Safety policies. It also introduces further redundancy to allow clubs to manage clashes they may have with other events. The team thresholds will be unchanged - only the men's best 8 results and ladies' best 7 will be counted. The individual leagues will now count the best 7 results from 12 instead of 6 from 10, thus allowing up to 5 races to be dropped. This programme now offers more flexibility in the choice of races and allows clubs to place teams in Hampshire Cross Country League races that might have otherwise have clashed with the Road Races on the same weekend.
  • Club 'Honours Board'
  • (From the Chairman) My first duty as chairman is to create an honours list board on the website. Here is an initial list. I am absolutely sure we have many triathlon internationals but no one is coming forward with the information. Please contact me and I will compile a list. Also I know we have won team medals at 10 miles & 10k in national events. Once again, please contact me with the details, or anything else that you think should be included. If you need more information give me a ring on 02380790364, or email me at tonren.fern@btinternet.com.

  • Club AGM on 3rd April
  • Steve Veal stepped down as chairman of the club. Here is his final chairman's report. We all owe him a great deal for his successful leadership over many years. Congratulations to Tony Fern who is the new chairman and let's give him all the support he needs to take on Steve's role. Follow the links for the secretary's report and the membership secretary's report from this meeting, both thanks to Eryl.
Christine Benning (England Athletics) making a grant award to John Cork (Treasurer) and Steve Veal (Chairman) of Southampton Running Club
Pictured at a recent club training night at Southampton University Training Grounds in Wide Lane, Eastleigh were members of an evening training group from Southampton Running Club who met up with Christine Benning , South East England Sub regional Manager (England Athletics) to take receipt of the £500 grant awarded to the club for enhancement of coaching education at the club. During the previous six months SRC have developed 3 club members to pass level 1 coaching standard and a further 3 have progressed onwards to levels 2 and 3. These coaches have to devote a considerable amount of their time to improve their knowledge and skills and will ultimately benefit all runners under their guidance and improve overall racing standards in line with the strategy set out by England Athletics towards 2012 and beyond.

    2009 JUN 24: CHICHESTER MIDSUMMER 5
The three amigos rode into Chichester on Wednesday 24th June and together with a posse of 98 attempted to apprehend James Baker. They failed and contented themselves with the free drinks (including beer on tap) and huddled around a camp fire (barbecue to be exact) and partook of unlimited free burgers. Fortunately no beans were provided. At least Sid walked away with the male vet 50 prize. [From Paul Johnson]

    2009 JUN 14: ALRESFORD 10K
Combine the hills of the Marwell and Ropley 10k and you have got a similar course to the Alresford 10k. Definitely not a PB course. Being an out and back course, the relief of a long downhill section was somewhat tempered by the thought of having to run up it about 10 minutes later. Plus a hot sunny morning added to the torture. Only the 2nd year of this meet. It is very well organised, plenty of marshalls, baggage storage, showers etc and as much free fruit (apples, bannas and oranges) as you could eat. The website results are not showing club attachment so I have identified the runners below as SRC members. (about 250 runners completing the course) Demetrius, son of Geoff, SRC coach , putting in impressive performance. [From Sidney DeLara]

2009 MAY 18: SCVAC TRACK AND FIELD LEAGUE
    Southampton Vets on the up!
On a blustery Basingstoke track, in conditions that even Usain Bolt would have winced at, the newly formed Southampton RC vets team stormed to their best placing so far in a Southern Vets Athletics League match.
The field squad, team captain Derek Warn, boosted by the help of Team Southampton's Michael Coker, lead the way with several great performances. Both athletes picking up vital points in the pole vault, triple jump, discus and Javelin. Multi-event specialist Warn was particularly pleased with a new personal best in the triple jump.
This week's track event were the 200m, 800m, 3000 steeple chase and the 4x400m relay. The sprinters, Jon Tilt and Jim Bennett got Southampton off to a great start with a pair of wins in the 200. Michele Wakefield raced to a season's best and a useful second place in the women's event. Less than half an hour later Bennett paired up with Andy Morgan-Lee to record 2nd and 3rd in the 800. Howard Long and Morgan-Lee then braved the elements in the steeple chase. Morgan-Lee showing he'd not lost any of his renowned hurdling ability, eased to victory in the final lap, with Long adding a creditable 3rd place in the 'B' string.
The final event pitched Long, Bennett, Morgan-Lee and Tilt together in the 4x400 relay. Southampton triumphed, finishing first by just over half a second to clinch a well deserved second place in the match.
The team are still looking for new members. If you are interested in joining, please contact Derek Warn.

2009 MAY 16: BMAF RELAYS, SUTTON PARK
May 16th, Sutton Park, Birmingham.

We're looking for an A and a B team in the top 10 at the 4 stage relays at Aldershot on Sat 26th September!!
PS well done to the SRC MV50's who yet again successfully completed the National 6 stage earlier in the day, with a 28th place. Apologies for the lack of photos, but I didn't quite get there to see you running! [From Dave Blackman]

    2009 APR 27: SCVAC LEAGUE
Well done, to everyone who turned up in Portsmouth for the 1st vets league match last night, where we finished in 4th place. We had a great time and produced some fine performances. We only failed to fill 3 events in the mens team which is very good, hopefully we can have a full house next time. The ladies team was sadly very thin on the ground. Lynn Massey was our only competitor but still performed at her best. Thanks also to everyone who helped me to organise the team. A good start as a track and field club. [From Derek Warn]

The 2009 Saucony MK Relays (incorporating the Men's 12- and Women's 6-stage Southern Road Relay Championships). On Sunday 5th April six ladies embarked on the journey to Milton Keynes with their team support in tow (Tony, John, Richie and Ian). The weather was perfect-sunny, slight breeze. The scenic course was a slightly undulating 5.5k. All the ladies ran extremely well finishing an excellent 11th overall in light of the team being plagued with injuries and illness. A big thank you to Karen Rushton, Hannah Coombs, Marie Stokes, Carly Donaldson and Angie Habgood. [From Nicci B]

Two Southampton club members ran the Paris Marathon on Sunday 5th April (only 2 as far as I know). Here are the results. The first time is the chip time and the second time is the gun time. Nice event but a few too many good standard club runners meant that too many runners were in the way for the first few miles.

    2009 MAR 22: MARWELL 10K
Nice sunny day, hilly course. 437 men and 255 women managed to get around. A variety of running styles akin to the natives of Marwell were on show. Some running with the grace of a Gazelle others adopting the donkey plod. Congrats to Mark Campbell finishing 3rd and John Hiley 5th in his first ever 10k. Mens team 4 to score coming 1st. 2009 MAR 21: BMAF CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Following on from Karen's win in the Romsey 5 in January, she has competed in a number of other early season races. These have included 1st Lady in the Lytchett Manor 10 on 15th Feb in a time of 62:17 (13th overall), 1st Lady in the Terminator at Pewsey on 22nd Feb in a time of 1:30:53, and 2nd Lady in the Devizes 10k on 8th March in a time of 38:00 (13th overall). The Lytchett Manor was an impressive performance due to the course being very undulating and race winner Willard Chinhanhu of Poole being restricted to 52:50, much slower than he normally does (48:37 in the 2007 Great South). The Terminator was also a good performance and the nominal 10 mile distance which is often closer to 11 was this year lengthened again to incorporate an additional lung bursting climb. Karen's winning margin was also close to 5 minutes. The Devizes 10k was run on a particularly windy day and it was no disgrace to come 2nd to Amy Chalk from Bristol who finished a fine 26th in the National at Parliament Hill. Karen's times this year put her in the current top 5 in her age group at 5m, 10km and 10m.
All of these races were used as stepping stone towards the BMAF cross country at Ruthin in North Wales on 21st March. After a long trek up the day before and an overnight stay in Wrexham, race day dawned clear but cool with a strong breeze blowing which continued through the day. The ladies race (plus O/70 men) was first off at midday. New vet and former UK steeplechase record holder Tara Krzywicki from Charnwood took the lead immediately with the other favoured runners including Karen settling into their stride behind. At the end of the first lap Karen was running with O/45's Jane Clarke and European indoor 800m, 1,500m (and world record holder), and 3,000m champion Clare Elms, and only a short distance behind O/40 leader Nicki Nealon. The order stayed much the same over the second lap although Karen did overtake O/35 Clare McKittrick also from Charnwood and pulled away from Jane Clarke to finish 6th overall and 2nd in her age group. The race was of an excellent standard and Karen put in a great run to finish where she did. She is now looking forward to the rest of the season and to running even quicker times. 2009 MAR 15: EXBURY GARDENS 10K
The 2nd running of the Exbury Gardens 10K on Sunday March 15th saw perfect running weather for the field of 304 runners. Yet again the event was very well organised and marshalled by Hardley Running Club. The race was won by former Southampton Running Club member Matt West who now runs for Winchester in a time of 36.07. First 3 men and women home gained a prize, so congrats to Carol Ann Donaldson of SRC, female 3rd (missing 2nd by 3 seconds). [From Sidney DeLara]

    2009 FEB 1: RYDE 10 MILES
[From Steve Harris 2/2/09] The wind was beating me back, my new trainers were biting my heels and the hill wasn't doing me any favours, but I thought to myself "Yes!! 2 miles down, only 8 more to go...". Bad jokes were my respite to the awful running conditions. In hindsight, at least it didn't snow. That said, there were some strong performances from Nicci Blandford and the ever present Richie Pearson both picking up prizes for their efforts. Hannah Coombs didn't let the weather phase her on the way to running a new PB. Also well done to the other club runners who braved the weather to compete.
[From Richie Pearson 2/2/09] Rarely can a road race have been run in such inclement conditions, with a strong freezing easterly wind blowing sand into the face, along a very exposed Ryde sea front. However some respectable times were achieved despite the conditions in particular by Nicci Blandford and Hannah Coombs both fresh from representating Hampshire in the Inter Counties Cross Country Championships the previous day.

2009 JAN 17: THAMES TOWPATH ULTRA MARATHON
Sam Morton sent the following report on this 50 mile race to Ian Burgess and Malcolm Price:
"I just thought I'd drop you both a line to let you know that I represented the club at the recent Thames Towpath Ultra Marathon (17th January). I'm not sure if this is of any interest to the club as I don't know of anyone else who ran it, and to be honest I kind of missed club training for several months so that I could get the miles in. Anyhow, I managed to finish, sadly I didn't bring any silverware home as the winner completed in 6hrs 12mins which was about twice as quick as I was able but I survived the high attrition rate (123 finished of the 210 entered). Just having an easy couple of weeks to let the swelling go down and the ITB pain to subside and I'll be at training (work permitting). Sam Morton (probably the least present club member at training in the clubs history)."

The Boscombe seafront seems to have its own micro climate. Didn't notice any wind until arrival at the venue, fortunately more of a cross wind, than in the face. A fast time by Willard Chinanhu of Poole Runners, only 7 seconds slower than that achieved by Andy Morgan-Lee of Southampton RC here in 2007. Mat H and Mat M again just missing out on sub 16mins. Well done to David Blackman 1st home in the 40-44 age group and a credible second place F 20-39 for Nikki Blandford. 208 runners finished the course. This race often suffers from windy conditions that make it difficult to get a good time on what is otherwise a fast course. This year was different. There was no wind, clear blue skies, and the temperature briefly peaked at around 8C at the time of the race. Perfect. Despite the temperature, there were still a few patches of ice on the promenade though. A very strong field took advantage of the excellent conditions, with 17 men finishing under 25 minutes. Unfortunately it was a poor turnout of SRC runners, despite the Road Race League status, because of clashes with other races. I was unable to contribute to the team score, dropping out with a pulled calf muscle after one mile. [From Alan Tulip]

2008 NOV 30: DOWNTON HALF MARATHON
A challenging yet scenic course greeted runners for the Downton Half, weather conditions making it far from ideal to admire the views around Woodgreen and Godshill before sweeping back into Downton. In spite of the weather some good performances from Southampton members on what is definely not a PB course!
Of note: 13 runners were disqualified for the illegal use of headphones.

    2008 NOV 28: BOSCOMBE 5K SERIES
The 2nd run in series of 6. Cold evening and some organisational problems this time. Runners not allowed access to pub facilities, Start line moved 500 metres. All very perturbing for late arrivers such as myself, so I ended up a non runner. So able to watch Matt Hibberd finished in 2nd place ahead of race 1 winner and in a new PB time. Keppel (mabye) and Bennett also achieving PBs.

On a chilly wet and windy morning five intrepid club runners were looking for deck chairs in the Boscombe area only to get themselves involved with the Boscombe 10k. The course, not the easiest, was really multi terrain and undulating with our ever- smiling Niki Blandford bringing the club home in 39:58 (2nd lady) with 4 men bringing up the rear guard. 2008 OCT 27: DUBLIN MARATHON
I ran Dublin last Monday (Bank Holiday in Ireland) in 3.12.21 (6th M55 and a PB by 6 minutes and 25 years after my last one!). Good city marathon, fantastic support, undulating course and only 1 hour from Southampton. Definitely recommended. [From Ian Richardson]

    2008 OCT 25: SNOWDONIA MARATHON
Paul Harvey M50 did 4:28:07 in the Snowdonia Marathon. Couldn't find any other club members. http://www.snowdoniamarathon.co.uk/ Sounds like it was a particularly foul day. I think it was the same weekend as the OMM Mountain Marathon event that was hit by stormy weather in the Lake District and made the main news headlines. [From Paul Carter]

    2008 OCT 19: CC6 BEAULIEU ROAD STATION
Nice sunny October morning and scenic setting to first of the CC6 series saw the return of Richard Miller to Southampton Running club, straight away stating his intent by coming in a close second. Impressive performance from Mike Read not far behind in 5th. The mens team came 2nd. Two top ten finishes, Katy Roby 8th and Anne Bennett 9th helped put the womens team into 3rd place.

    2008 OCT 17: BOSCOMBE 5K SERIES
The Boscombe 5k (race 1of 6)(best 4 scores from 6), an evening monthly 5k run once a month along the seafront promenade during the winter. So apart from the dark, you have an unusual running surface of tarmac 80% covered in sand. The two Matts provided a gloss finish to come in only seconds behind the winner. Cross hot on their heels. Probably some pb,s/sb,s here .Collins also obtaining pb/sb. Bennett and Reed hindered early on by a rather chaotic start, the line being moved due to building work. 1st Female and 5th overall was Stephanie Twell of Aldershot/Farnham AC who ran the 1500m at Bejing Olympics. 267 runners completed the course.

    2008 SEP 21: STANSTED PARK SLOG/SLUG
Fine weather greeted runners for the 3rd Stansted Park Slog and Slug. With no Southampton runners taking part in the ill fated slug (lead runners all went wrong). We certainly made up for it in the Slog filling the top three places. With the two Matt's Missen and Hibberd using it as a good training run, it was down to yours truly to lead the field home. Fine views of the Sussex Downs were enjoyed by all the Southampton runners once they'd reached the peaks of some challenging hills.

    2008 AUG 31: THE BEAST
Living up to it's name with some very steep hills and unforgiving steps to negotiate this is one of those events for those who like to run on the adventurous side. Based in sight of Corfe castle the weather was kind, and the five Southampton members who took part ran well and enjoyed a good day out.

2008 AUG 24: PEWSEY VALE HALF MARATHON
A superb half marathon organised by Pewsey Vale RC (the 'Terminator' people). Good parking, excellent refreshments and a decent T shirt. Frequently hot and always hilly, one tough lap in the wilds of Wiltshire. Current record holder is Dan Robinson, who also ran on Sunday... in the Olympic Marathon!

Liam Richardson 1:21-43 5th senior man (PB by 6 minutes)
    Ian Richardson 1:29-20 3rd M50

Enjoyable race run in near perfect weather. Just one note from the results, I'm not sure if it's a computer glitch or an over-site but, Hannah Coombs was not listed as a Southampton runner being classified as unattatched, Hannah ran well finishing 14th lady, 3rd Senior lady, and had Hannah counted, would have brought the ladies team in second with 59 points ahead of Bracknell Forest runners on 61. 2008 JUL 2: PORTSMOUTH PROMENADE 5K

    2008 JUN 22: BRADING 10K
Sally Diaper showed what a class athlete she is once again winning the Ladies Race for the second time in as many years as a vet with a time of 43.44 on a hot and hilly course. However some people are never satisfied as her coach was disappointed knowing she was only 10 seconds off her PB having later learnt she eased up for the last 3K.

Thanks to everyone who took part in the above event on a cold and windy night. Thanks especially to Southampton Running
Club and Malcom Price and Eryl Penney in particular for hosting the event and arranging for the unusual 800m course to
be marked out. Although it may have been a little more difficult to assess the right pace on the longer laps it did
result in less congestion at the change over point at which there was no serious congestion (despite some people not
knowing left from right!). Congratulations to Team Southampton 'A' for setting the fastest time but congratulations
also to all the teams and particularly the three all ladies teams and the Junior team from New Forest Runners. There
was a good atmosphere and plenty of team spirit on such a chilly night. We can hopefully look forward to a warmer
evening next year when Team Southampton host the event as a reward for winning!
We will let you know to which charity your donations are given.

    2008 JUN 4: D-DAY 10K
This Wednesday evening race starts and finishes on the track at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth and is completely flat, but the now traditional windy conditions slowed times a little on what was otherwise a pleasant evening. That's one of my excuses for being slower than I expected, the other being that I must have gone round the outside of all the bends because my GPS measured the course as 290m long!

2008 MAY 17: NATIONAL VETS ROAD RELAYS
SRC members travelled up to Sutton Park, north of Birmingham on Saturday to contest the British National Veteran Road Relay Championships and came home with reputations enhanced in the face of intense competition from a total of over 200 teams across all the age groups.
This event, established some 20 years ago, now reflects the dramatic growth in veteran road race competition as clubs from every corner of Britain headed to Birmingham to do battle in their own age categories; men with veteran 40 into 10 year age bands and women at vet 35 into 10 year age bands. Controversially, there has been a move in recent years to bring the men's age groups in line with the women's at these relays and clubs are being asked to vote for this major change. This policy change still comes at odds with current England Athletics standards and is not getting the level of support that the organisers were expecting.
The starting gun at Sutton Park was fired at 11.00 am prompt to send away some 140 of the entered teams; with every runner covering the same distance of approximately 5 km around a hilly and sometimes exposed course.
The differing age groups and categories covered a different number of legs according to their category. The 6 man veteran 50 squad from Southampton Running Club were challenging the other 45 clubs for supremacy in their race. Runners here were doused periodically in sharp rain showers, which served to chill both runners and supporters, but did nothing to dampen the spirited attack they made to gain a top 10 finish for the first time in their history.
The SRC men made a solid start on the 1st leg with 18th position and as the race progressed they gradually nibbled their way up the field to finish in 12th place, almost 2 hours after the start. The race was won here by Wesham Runners from the Nottingham area with Oxford City taking team silver.
The next major calendar event with veteran only relays falls at the end of September at the South of England Relays held at Rushmoor Arena near Aldershot.

SRC times (in leg order) :

2008 MAY 7: PORTSMOUTH PROMENADE SERIES RACE 1
Anyone intending to do race 2 or 3 should note that due to the building of a new Olympic sized swimming pool adjoining the Mountbatten centre , the start of the race has been moved and also you will have to go across the road after the race to the Alexander Sports shop to read the results where you will also get a free energy drink and if you need any running gear the shop will be open (it was on Weds anyway).

If I had to pick one, then that would be the effort of Raymond Gee because at the age of nearly 79 it shows that age is no barrier to what can be achieved. Raymond finished 4TH in his age group. A big well done to all of you.

In addition another club member Gemma Sizer-Green (who was unable to get a place in the London) did the Exmoor Coastal Marathon the day before the London so that she could train with us and complete her second marathon. This was the “last event in the Endurancelife Coastal Trail Running Series, and as the most challenging of the 5 courses makes a fitting finale to this awesome series”. Unfortunately for Gemma this was not an official marathon distance and as time went on it became very clear to Gemma that the mile markers were not matching what her Garmin said and she ended up doing 29 miles!!! An incredible achievement when you are expecting only 26.2 miles over a very hilly and challenging course. Her time was 5:52:13 and she came 28th out of 75 and was the 9th female to finish.

2008 APR 6: SOUTHERN ROAD RELAYS
[From Malcom Price] Despite the severe snowstorms that fell all across North Hampshire, leaving a four inch lie of snow for most of the day on the relays Sunday morning, the majority of the Southern clubs entered for the South of England 12 and 6 satge relays still managed to field full teams. The worst affected clubs were from the West of England , whence there were several absentees. The men's 12 stage race involves 6 short legs of approx 4.5 K m and 6 log legs over double that distance, 9 km. While the women comepted over 6 legs of identical distance to the men's short stages. The midday start gun set off 42 men's teams and shortly after, 31 women's teams to compete for over 4 hours around the traffic free circuit of Rushmoor Military Arena near Aldershot. The difference in fi8nishing times between the male winners, Belgrave Harriers , and teams further down the field , was so great that the organisers set off the final leg as a one off race . Many clubs were already over an hour behind the winners when they set off in the 'shotgun' 12 stage run. In recent years the major city clubs have started to dominate these events - having the resources in depth to compete at this level. This year was no different , as shown by Belgrave with the men and Shaftesbury Barnet with the women. However, local club Aldershot Farnham & District managed to bring their respective teams in runner up spot; once again showing their depth , and all without the talents of No1 UK junior, Steph Twell , who is currently injured. Both Winchester AC (8th) and Southampton Running Club (10th) finished women's teams well to the fore. While the Southampton squad also took 17th place in the men's relay. Thus qualifying for the National event at Sutton Park in three weeks time.

LADIES: [From Nicci Blandford] Yet another brilliant turn out for SRC. A combo of seniors and vets ladies represent SRC at the southern 6 stage relay. All team members preformed well with excellent individual times and did their ladies team captain proud. Many thanks to Tony, eryl, malc, john and richie for their support, taxi service and the club tent!! Also thanks for all the teams support and cheers throughout the race.

MEN: [From Matt Hibberd] A strong performance from a team, with many making their debut at this level. The team finished 17th, with a mixture of long legs (8.6km) and short legs (4.3km). Sets us up nicely for a year competing at the highest level and the potential to get better as a team. Thanks to all the runners and the usual suspects for their help and support.

2008 MAR 23: ISLE OF WIGHT THREE HILLS
I have spent many a happy holiday along at the pretty end of the Isle of Wight, and put in the occasional 75 mile training week on it's stunningly beautifull hills. For a few years had promised myself I would have a pop at Ryde Harriers' three hills race and yesterday I finally made it. I would recommend it. Like a number of the Ryde Harriers races, it is primarily filled by Islanders, a couple of quality Island club runners, and one or two better runners who happen to be there on holiday. And so it was. Perhaps it was the threat of bad weather, or just the early Easter, but the field was pretty thin at the front end. After the first mile I followed the 46 year old Peter Stainer from Shaftsbury Barnett who had put in a 72 minute run at Bath last week, briefly catching him once (okay, when he got lost!). This resulted in an easy second place in 50:26.

The race was extremely well organised and we all had a great day, most of us sharing cars which helped to create a good team spirit. We enjoyed free soup, coffee, cake, bread and butter pudding etc while we waited for the ladies to receive their prizes but unfortunately they could not be persuaded to break open the bottles of wine they all won. 2008 FEB 10: WOKINGHAM HALF MARATHON
They say it’s no good being a coach unless you can practice what you preach, and John o’Shea certainly did that. John came past me at about 9 miles like Flash Gordon on a motorbike leaving me to suffer in pain. The King of coaching went onto cruise to a PB in 1:28:25. . But John was like someone that had broken a world record, he wouldn’t leave Wokingham until he had found out his official time eventually pestering the guy on the computer at the finish. For someone that had heart problems this was a TERRIFIC performance. Who said good coaching doesn’t pay?

    2008 FEB 8: BOSCOMBE 5K
A "fun" evening was had by a number of club members at the Boscombe 5k Winter Series on Friday night. The fun element came in the form of pitch darkness for the first (and last, being an out-and-back course) 970 meters, and the fact that half the beach had been deposited onto the prom. Well, perhaps not half, but certainly at least 75% of the course was covered to a depth of up to 4 inches (that's 10.16 cm to those under V40. Both of you.). A straw poll on times shows the regular Boscombe 5k participants were about 25 to 40 seconds down on the perfect conditions of the December event. Andrew Welch from Ashford won in 16:09, but he was almost a minute out in front. 190 took part.

    2008 FEB 3: RYDE 10M
A few of us enjoyed the hills and the wind of the Ryde 10M, and in doing so came away with a few prizes. Karen Rushton was three minutes clear of the womens field to take first, a fantastic winning margin even with the Winchester women in Portugal. The young Andy Morgan-Lee (yes, "young", because Andy was our only senior runner for either gender!) took third in the mens race which was just as commendable as the Winchester men turned up in force and filled 6 of the first 10 places. SRC filled 3 of the top 11 so took second team prize. Graham Bungay, George Hide and me had a great battle for the V40 prize, until the first of two cartilage crunching descents at mile 8 saw Graham open an unassailable lead which he never lost.

2008 JAN 26: SOUTHERN CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Another record turnout with the Southern returning to Parliament Hill Fields after last years event in Norfolk. For the first time in the club's history we fielded a Ladies Team. The mens team retained the Hampshire cup for teams of 12 to score. A total of 31 SRC runners completed the course and we were the only club to finish four men's teams. A total of 24 club members stayed overnight following the race(another record) and a good time was had by all, the evening culminating in a fine curry.

2008 JAN 5: COUNTY CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Just got back from Dibden Inclosure where we enjoyed a big variety of results.

The ladies had 9 running, but Lucy Jones fell in the trees on the first main circuit and had to be taken to hospital to check there were no fractures in her turned ankle. The team closed in 8th behind Winchester and Guernsey plus AFD.

    22 Marie Stokes 33.37 ;
    31 Hannah Coombs 34.49 ;
    38 Carly Donaldson 36.04 ;
    50 Debbie Hallett 38.18 (having missed the start by 2 minutes);

    66 Sue Read 42.03 ;
    71 Lynn Massey 44.26.

The men suffered even more fun with 4 runners not showing, 3 men turning up too late for the start , 3 men pulling out having sustained injuries in the race and 1 (Nick Buis) having to take LucyJones to hospital. Despite those events the team closed in 4th just behind Winchester, AFD and Guernsey, by closing their scoring 6 inside the first 36 places while the vets managed a bronze behind AFD and Guernsey. Dave Adams was saving his energy for Saints cup game later that afternoon.
