  • Cross Country Grand Prix 2009/2010
  • The results of the final race at Salisbury are now included in the table. Congratulations to the ladies winner, NICCI BLANDFORD, and the men's winner, ANDY MORGAN-LEE. We should also congratulate them, along with Matt Missen, Matt Hibberd, Peter Collins and Jim Bennett, for running in every one of the qualifying events. [31/3/10]
  • Southampton Men take Individual Gold and Team Silver at SEAA Masters Cross Country Championships
  • I looked at some old race numbers that I keep in the loft, and saw that the last time I ran at Trent Park in north London was on Valentine's day in 1981 at the Southern XC Champs. The three of us that went up to Trent Park on Sunday were competing in a slightly older age category this time, although no less keenly fought! In the M40-49 race, Andy took the lead in the first of three laps, and held it to the end of the 10k course. James showed his class with a strong 12th place, and I made up the team with a 26th. I have to say that it was a fantastic day. Not just because of the sunshine, nor simply the silver team medal, and not even the celebratory pint on the way home, but mostly by the strong team spirit. Thanks lads! [David Blackman 19/3/10]

  • SRC members run for England
  • On Saturday 14th November Karen Rushton travelled up to Birmingham to compete for the England Ladies O40 cross country team in the annual fixture against Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland. Karen had been selected on the back of a win in the national vets 5k track and 10k road, and a 2nd place in the cross country championships. In driving rain and strong wind she ran a well judged race on the undulating course to finish 6th in her age group only a short distance behind the bronze medallist. She was 2nd counter for the England team behind race winner Debbie Walters with the team finishing a close 3rd behind Wales and Ireland. This has been a successful year for Karen in which in addition to the above she has won a number of local races and also run for the South of England senior team in an inter area 10k in Cardiff.
Andy Morgan Lee was also at Birmingham on the weekend having been selected as a reserve for the England Mens O40 cross country team. Although he didn't get a run in the main international race, he did win the accompanying open race in an excellent time that would have seen him place well in the main race. [Peter Costley 16/11/09]
  • Dates for later this year
  • Just found out dates for 6 & 12 stage rd relays next spring, so thought it would be good to let you all know so you can put them in your diaries. The men's and women's races (Southerns and Nationals) are both on a Sat. Southerns: 20/3/10 @ the Open Uni, Milton Keynes and Nationals: 17/4/10 @ Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield. Use this link for more details. The National Inter-Counties XC Champs will be at Cofton Park, Birmingham on 13/3/10. Not sure about the Southern Champs yet. [Hannah Coombs 16/11/09]
  • Southern and National Cross Country Championships
  • Yes its that time of year again. The Southern is being held at Parliament Hill Fields on 30th January and the National in Leeds at Roundhay Park on 27th February. Closing dates for these events are always early so I need names. Do not assume that just because you usually run that your name will somehow appear on the start list. The club will pay the entry fee so please make a committment to run and stick to it. Please let me know preferably by email to richiepearson@ntlworld.com or by telephone. See contacts link on the left for the number. The optional overnight stay in London for the Southern is in the planning stage and I will advise members of the details once sorted. An overnight stay for the National in Leeds would also seem sensible. [Richie Pearson 29/10/09]
  • Masters Athletics League 2009
  • Here is a link for the Monday night vet track league we competed in this summer for the first time and it lists all results of the 4 matches. I think we did very well on our debut finishing an excellent 3rd overall. Well Done Guys!!! I have also compiled a vets track club records from this so hopefully it will encourage a few more to perhaps get involved especially the ladies who finished 5th overall with only 4 athletes so thanks should go to Lynne Massey, Michelle Wakefield, Jackie Warn and Courtney Davis. [Andy Morgan-Lee 22/9/09]

It will continue to be sponsored by Just Run and apply to the first 9 races in the League (see fixture list at www.hrrl.org.uk). A minimum of 5 races will need to be run to qualify for the final awards at the Club Awards Evening next Spring. Click the ROAD GRAND PRIX SERIES button above right for the Overton results. [7/9/09]
  • Local Charity has London 2010 place available
  • We have received the following from Jenny Gower of Southampton Counselling: "We are a small charity based in Northam and next year one of our fundraising activities is a place on the London Marathon. We wondered if any one from Southampton Running Club would be interested in running for us. We have the place and will make all the arrangements including cheering and supporting on the day!" Please contact Jenny on 02380 639966 if you are interested. See also www.southamptoncounselling.org for more details of what they do.
  • Message from the Chairman
  • In the past I have run my training group with the aid of Ray Needle who has been a brilliant help to me. Ray has also coached to a high level, Lee Rodrigues being an example. But we are getting no younger. About three years ago Jon Tilt joined the group too. Although a 400 metre hurdles specialist he felt the strength gained from middle distance training would help him. He was right and became World Vet Champ for the over 45. Jon then took his coaching exams but all the time he watched and learned. Gradually his comments and his business-like attitude towards the training has convinced me to take a back seat in the group. I shall still be coaching the people that I coach now and will continue to coach anyone who really wants me to coach them. See my website tonyferncoaching.org.uk. But I will only be at training sessions to advise Jon. HE WILL BE IN CHARGE OF TUESDAY AND THURSDAY NIGHTS. Last year if I had a table tennis match in the league on those nights I had to get the reserve to play, also I missed some great dances. So I am looking forward to having more time to myself. Saturday will be my main coaching day, but I have every confidence my athletes will benefit from Jon's Tues/Thurs sessions. Jon works abroad sometimes and I will help him and Ray out then and I will try to assist on other nights. I have run the group for 35 years now and have made some wonderful friends. It really has been no hardship, I have really enjoyed it. Our group has always been open to anyone from any club. Jon has assured me this will continue to be the case. [August 2009]
  • BMAF Relays, Birmingham
  • May 16th, Sutton Park, Birmingham. For only the second time this century, the SRC Vet 40 men had a full team at the British Masters Road Relay National Championship, complimenting the much more regular appearance of the SRC V50's. It is no mean feat to get 8 fit, uninjured veterans to commit to travelling 300 miles to Sutton Park and back in a day, but after meeting up at Flemming park, we all piled into 2 cars, which all added to the team spirit that was to shape the day. Building a squad like ours is testament to the breadth of talent we have in the club, and should be a good foundation for the future. Of course having Andy recently qualify for the age group helped persuade fellow runners that we were serious, and brought some class to the team! But a team is only a team if everyone turns up, and despite some better offers (if that could be possible!) and niggling strains, every man counted for a solid 17th place (from 53 clubs that took part on the day) (or, as I prefer to quote, 17th from 1673 English clubs, most of which could not even muster a team!!).

So look out for the names of Dave Blackman, Andy Morgan-Lee, Graham Bungay, Jon Grainger, Paul Johnson, John O'Shea, Scott Augur, and Howard Long at future Vets events. We're looking for an A and a B team in the top 10 at the 4 stage relays at Aldershot on Sun 27th September!!
PS well done to the SRC MV50's who yet again successfully completed the National 6 stage earlier in the day, with a 28th place. Apologies for the lack of photos, but I didn't quite get there to see you running! [From Dave Blackman]
  • RVCP 10K - Thanks
  • Thanks to those who helped for a very successful race in difficult conditions. There were 510 finishers which is a record and I do appreciate the support of members without which the race could not take place. A particular mention to Steve Veal who somehow manages to get everything set up and then goes off to work!!
"Well done, a slick race, well organised." Roger T (Race Secretary Fareham Crusaders) [From Richie Pearson]
  • Southern Vets Athletics League
  • As most of you are aware SRC have entered the Southern Vets Athletics league this season. Only athletes of 35 and over can compete in these events but I would like to encourage anyone else to support the team by timekeeping, officiating or simply turning up to cheer us on. Please let me know if you are interested in getting involved in these friendly events, many thanks, Derek. Schedule [From Derek Warn]
  • Success for Karen Rushton in BMAF Cross Country
  • Karen Rushton finished second in the BMAF Cross Country championships on March 21st. Report
  • News from Russell Coleman
  • I wanted to ask a favour. As we are planning to stay out in Cayman for a couple more years we have a problem in that we cannot find anyone to look after our 2 cats. The friend we have looking after them is moving away and cannot keep them for much longer. They are long haired brown cats and are sisters less than 5 years old. Could anyone who is interested in taking them on send me an e-mail to caymanturtle@hotmail.co.uk.
On another note I have got the marathon bug and am about to do the Boston marathon on 20th April which I am really looking forward to. It is apparently quite hilly which I am worried about but hopefully I'll run a personal best time as I have been training pretty hard. Is anyone from SotonRC running Boston? I will be back in August so hoping to do the RR10 at Hursley.
  • Inter-counties Cross Country, Nottingham, March 7th
  • This prestigious cross country event plays host to the CAU Inter Counties Championships as well as the World Cross Country trials. We were blessed with cool dry conditions, and the testing terrain of the hill up to Wollaton Hall played its part in deciding many of the races. I was proud to be apart of the Senior Ladies Hampshire Team along with 7 other local girls from Aldershot, Team Southampton and Guernsey. The whole experience was amazing, the atmosphere, the course and the supporters. All the team performed to a very high standard in a high quality field. Namely Steph Twell for winning and Emma Palliant finishing 17th. I finished 102 being the 4th scorer of the team. Overall we were 8th team. I had a brilliant day once I found my way there (a few wrong turns). I would like to thank Tony Fern, John O'Shea and Richie Pearson for all their coaching, support and kind words. In addition thank you to all those who wished me well on the day (you all know who you are). [From Nicci Blandford 13/03/09]

  • SCVAC Indoor Championships
  • SRC track & field vets team are definitely out of the blocks! Last Sunday, 8th Feb, a contingent of the upcoming summer's SRC SCVAC (Southern Counties Veterans AC) league team competed in the SCVAC Indoor Championships at the superb Lee Valley facility. For some of us it was our first experience of an indoor arena; for all of us it was an excellent day out and a positive indication of current fitness for the season to come. Between four of us we walked off with 6 medals, 5 titles and 4 huge grins (see photo). Derek Warn managed a PB in every event he took part in, and the club now boasts multiple Southern Counties champions (see results below).

Ultimately, we are aiming at the SCVAC track and field league, which takes place on four Monday evenings through the summer. Again, these events have a fantastic atmosphere, and with much more time to mooch about and chat to friends than at your average 10k or half marathon. Dates will be released soon.

Results from SCVAC Indoor Championships 2009 (for those signed up for the SRC SCVAC league team)
    Michelle Wakefield 200m W40 Gold 30.4, 400m W40 Gold 67s

  • Important info re Eastleigh 10K entries
  • We are living in difficult times, and I'm not talking about the recession. I'm talking about the expectations placed upon us as a "club that organises a road race". The authorities who oversee (and give permission for) road races, including the Eastleigh 10k, are expecting higher safety standards than ever before, which is the main reason why we are seeing the demise of many great, fully subscribed local road races. Either the authorities are advising against races in their current form, or, the running clubs that have organised them for many years don't think they can step up to the new levels expected.

I believe that as a club we can step up to the mark. Like Stubbington Green did 2 weeks ago. But it will need your help on the day. Stubbington did a fantastic job with a marshal at every junction. It will be a big task, but we need to match that.

Please mark down Sunday 29th March on your calendars, and email Malcolm at mc123456@tiscali.co.uk so that he can add you to the list of marshals.

The committee has decided that the Eastleigh 10k should still be open to SRC members. Many local clubs now forbid members from entering their races, but the committee supports the view that we can arrange cover in other ways. Therefore, if you are wanting to run in the event, then we require that you ask a family member or friend to fill your place on the marshals list. Your representative must be over 18, be able to communicate with runners and road users, and have a basic understanding of what it's like to have 2000 mad runners careering past! Please mail Malcolm at mc123456@tiscali.co.uk to let him know the name of your representative, and an address where we can send them some short instructions.

Thanks for your help - without it the Eastleigh 10k would no longer exist. [From David Blackman 28/01/09]
  • Inter Counties Cross Country, January 31st
  • [From Richie Pearson 2/2/09] For the first time, Southampton Running Club had two ladies representing Hampshire in the SEAA Inter Counties Cross Country Championships held at Biggleswade, Nicci Blandford and Hannah Coombs. The course of 6k was relatively fast with a short sharp hill on each lap which contrasted markedly with the mud heap the previous week for the Southern Championships at Hillingdon. Conditions were dry but with a fierce easterly wind. Nicci continued her excellent recent form and was rewarded with the Hampshire team winning the bronze medal with Nicci being second scorer. Hannah also performed very well in a good quality field. Nicci was 13th overall in 23.14; Hannah was 33rd in 25.06.
[From Ian Richardson 6/2/09] Charlie White also ran in the Inter Counties and was 22nd in the Under 15 race. On Saturday February 7 he represents Hampshire Schools in the South East counties event hoping to qualify for a place in the County team for the English Schools Championships in March.
  • A shy young lady(?)
  • About five years ago I was introduced to a shy young lady from Fitness First, Shirley who was keen to progress a bit in running. In those days I could keep up with her and help her towards those early races. Time has moved on. This week that shy lady finally came of age - gaining a County XC vest and finishing 3rd at a major local road race. OK I lied about being shy, but Nicci Blandford is a credit to the club and has earned every bit of her success with the hard work that has gone into making her the runner she is. [From Malcolm Price 19/01/09]
  • Club success at Hampshire Cross Country Championships
  • [From Nicci B] Well what a day. Saturday the 10th Jan 09. No mud but the hardest ground I have run on due to the minus temps we have had. A good turn out in such freezing condtions. The ladies did their team captain pround by performing so well. I, the team captain had a storming run to come in 6th (I had to run that fast just to keep warm!!) followed by Hannah Coombs, Christine Currie and Sally Diaper to claim 3rd team position overall. Pascale Fotherby, Elaine Goode and Lynn Massey ran to a high standard also over an undulating course that went on for 8.4k. Congrats to the Mens vet team who also claimed a prize with the senior men just missing out even after a brilliant performance by everyone. Well done everyone.
  • [From Malcolm Price] Congratulations to all those that ran the County, 35 men and 7 women. Team bronze for the women (a first county medal), team gold for the vet men, and 4th for the senior men. Thanks too must go to those members that kept me updated about illness and attending; but big raspberry to those members that did neither and failed to turn up. Your race numbers are nailed to a tree near the start at Dibden Inlcosure.
  • Also: the veterans are discussing the possibility of doing the National Masters XC Champs at Prestatyn North Wales on Sun 21st March. An overnight stay will be essential. Is there enough interest to raise a serious challenge for this race? E mail me or call me please. Malcolm
  • BMAF Open Cross Country Championships, Saturday 21st March
  • This National event this year takes place near Prestatyn and is open to all men and women over the age of 35 years. The distance is 6K for the ladies and 8K for the men. Closing date is 7th of March 2009 and entry forms can be found on www.bmaf.org.uk. It's 3 to score for M35 to 39, 4 to count in M40-49, remainder 3 to count. I appreciate this is probably an overnighter but we have a good chance of finishing well up particularly as Andy has told me he has it as a target race depending of course on his progress following his operation. Please let me know if you intend to run so we can organise transport. [From Richie Pearson 6/1/09]

    2010 MAR 7: SALISBURY 10 MILES
Beautiful, cloudless sky for this scenic run north along one side of the River Avon and back along the other, although there was a cold easterly wind and the temperature barely struggled above freezing point. Two short, sharp hills on the return leg did not prevent some good times. [From Alan Tulip]

    2010 FEB 21: WINCHESTER 10K
Hilly course , weather ok, 724 runners completed the course. Chip timing that only functioned at the end, no start mat, so in reality just a gun time. Shoddy results service, printed out after race in microscript , great diffuclty in reading and incomplete as regards information. Thus with the first 3 in each age band getting a prize a number of us hung around unneccessarily until awards made. By my reckoning Southampton RC won the team event (first 3 to count), but mysteriously a number of us were entered as Southampton City AC so hope this gets sorted.

Good weather conditions, a bit chilly. 6 SRC members managed to get across to the Island for this one. A very undulating course, with a nasty hill after 0.5miles and at 8.5miles. Seafront start and finish. Excellent run from Jeremy Curtis who managed to break the one hour barrier to finish 13th overall. Richie Pearson 3rd in age category. 334 runners completed the course. [From Sidney DeLara]
Approximatley 335 runners braved windy but otherwise good conditions on this sunny Sunday morning, on a course that can only be described as relentless hill running from start to finish. A good effort all round by all SRC runners on a tough race. [From Jeremy Curtis]

2010 JAN 30: SOUTHERN CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Congratulations to everyone who ran over this demanding course with a lot of mud and demanding hills. In particular Amy, Jonty, and Tim who had brilliant runs. This was the last time that our team will run under Southampton Running Club colours but we look forward to next year when the team will be strenghtened by our Team Southampton friends. We missed out to Aldershot in the Hampshire Cup 12 to score team event; an event we have won on several occasions and I think we can look back with a considerable amount of pride at our performances over the years at Parliament Hill. We now look forward to the National Cross Country at Leeds. [From Richie Pearson]

Race in Arctic conditions (Minus 2ish) or Christmas shopping. No option really. Numbers were surprisingly low, only a 100+ lunatics were let out to race, conditions were pretty darn good if you could ignore the sheer cold. I didn't see any SRC runners and I looked hard. A sunny but very windy day. The last 2 miles caused the usual problems.... not being able to stand up straight and run :) instead it was a battle to the end. This affected the overall times. One day the conditions well be good for this 10mile flat fast course :) [From Nicci Blandford]

    284 participants

In the 1980's we had Coe, Cram and Ovett. Now we have Delara, Staunton and Johnson, 3 runners who genuinely hate losing to each other (albeit at a very much lower level) so the scene was set for an epic encounter at the Denmead 10k. In fact they were SRC's sole representatives as many runners were participating in the CC6. After a blistering first half by Paul that left Pete and Sid trailing in his wake, Pete showing immense reserves of courage, managed to close to 10m at 7K, only to find the last 10m a bridge too far. Nevertheless a brilliant performance by Pete who has been hindered by work commitments and injury and the 40minute barrier beckons. The refreshments were 1st class (and cheap) and I can recommend the moist fruitcake with pineapple at 20p a slice. [From Paul Johnson]

2009 OCT 17: NATIONAL ROAD RELAYS
Saturday 17th October, National Road Relays in Birmingham. Tony Fern and Nicci Blandford sent a ladies team up to Birmingham for this years 4 stage National road relays. The famous four returned: Amy Campbell, Nicci Blandford, Marie Stokes and Hannah Coombs. Finishing in a very respectable 36th out of 88 teams, especially as there where a very strong field of international runners this year.

    4. Hannah Coombs 17.44
Nicci B would like to say a big thankyou to Tony Fern for helping to get the team there and Richie Pearson for his support and amazing photography and to the girlies who ran. xx [From Nicci Blandford]

    2009 SEP 5: OVERTON 5

[From Dave Blackman] Perfect running conditions somewhat made up for the gruelling hill on the Overton 5 mile race this year. The first race of the Hampshire Road Race League saw a decent SRC turnout from the men (come on girls, we missed you!). Strong turn out from WADAC, AFD and Stubbington meant that we didn't feature in the top three teams on the day, but nonetheless we feature in the prize giving - we were presented with a silver cup - the 3rd place division 1 series prize from last season. Thanks to Eryl and Malcolm for the support as usual, and to anyone else that was there (that's the trouble with being called "Dave" - you never know if people are cheering you on, or one of the other 100 runners of that name).

    2009 AUG 9: SALISBURY 5-4-3-2-1 SERIES
Sunday morning saw me making a mad dash to Salisbury to enter the 30km event of the 5-4-3-2-1 series. However the British rail system being what it is I arrived with only ten minutes to enter, change and stretch so I opted for the 20 which started 30 minutes later. I lined up with the other 160 entrants planning on hitting an easy ten minutes a mile in order to practise my pacing for an upcoming ultra-marathon but quickly tagged onto some runners from Totton and before I knew it was haring along at 8 minutes a mile up the side of Sarum Hill. This pace soon dropped off as I hit the second hill and I was back on track for a two hour run. Despite the increasing heat I continued at this pace up until the 9 mile mark where I was given the chance to gorge on jelly babies and refill my water bottle. After this my legs seemed to have had enough and I slowed down considerably over the last couple of miles and missed my two hour aim considerably to see me finish 24th in my age category.
This was an enjoyable run, very well organised, for a good cause (The Fire Fighters Charity) and some of the scenery was pretty impressive, running past Salisbury Cathedral was a particular highlight. I later learned that some of the tracks used for the route were opened specially.
The name of the run, in case anyone was wondering is based on the 5 rivers, four hills, 3 county estates, 2 castles and 1 cathedral that the route encompasses. To give you some idea of the terrain, the winning time was 1:41:27, so some pretty hard going in parts. [From Sam Morton]

2009 AUG 5: PORTSMOUTH PROMENADE SERIES RACE 3
Pleasant weather conditions. 187 runners managed to complete the distance. The race was won by Thomas Payn (Winchester & District)who blew the rest of the field away finishing in 14mins 36secs. Nicola Blandford picked up SW 2nd for the series award. [From Sidney DeLara]

    2009 JUL 19: BMAF 10K CHAMPIONSHIPS
On Sunday July 19th Karen Rushton travelled to Magor in South Wales to contest the BMAF 10k Championships. Although it was a fine morning in Southampton the weather deteriorated as she neared Wales arriving in squally conditions. The race itself was hotly contested, Sarah Gee from Reading gradually pulling away to take the overall title with Karen in the group covering 2nd to 5th place. The places chopped and changed over the last couple of miles and in the last mile during a particularly heavy downpour Karen managed to sprint past Liz Hartney also of Reading to clinch the over 40 BMAF title in a time of 37:27 mins. 2009 JUN 24: CHICHESTER MIDSUMMER 5
The three amigos rode into Chichester on Wednesday 24th June and together with a posse of 98 attempted to apprehend James Baker. They failed and contented themselves with the free drinks (including beer on tap) and huddled around a camp fire (barbecue to be exact) and partook of unlimited free burgers. Fortunately no beans were provided. At least Sid walked away with the male vet 50 prize. [From Paul Johnson]

    2009 JUN 14: ALRESFORD 10K
Combine the hills of the Marwell and Ropley 10k and you have got a similar course to the Alresford 10k. Definitely not a PB course. Being an out and back course, the relief of a long downhill section was somewhat tempered by the thought of having to run up it about 10 minutes later. Plus a hot sunny morning added to the torture. Only the 2nd year of this meet. It is very well organised, plenty of marshalls, baggage storage, showers etc and as much free fruit (apples, bannas and oranges) as you could eat. The website results are not showing club attachment so I have identified the runners below as SRC members. (about 250 runners completing the course) Demetrius, son of Geoff, SRC coach , putting in impressive performance. [From Sidney DeLara]

2009 MAY 18: SCVAC TRACK AND FIELD LEAGUE
    Southampton Vets on the up!
On a blustery Basingstoke track, in conditions that even Usain Bolt would have winced at, the newly formed Southampton RC vets team stormed to their best placing so far in a Southern Vets Athletics League match.
The field squad, team captain Derek Warn, boosted by the help of Team Southampton's Michael Coker, lead the way with several great performances. Both athletes picking up vital points in the pole vault, triple jump, discus and Javelin. Multi-event specialist Warn was particularly pleased with a new personal best in the triple jump.
This week's track event were the 200m, 800m, 3000 steeple chase and the 4x400m relay. The sprinters, Jon Tilt and Jim Bennett got Southampton off to a great start with a pair of wins in the 200. Michele Wakefield raced to a season's best and a useful second place in the women's event. Less than half an hour later Bennett paired up with Andy Morgan-Lee to record 2nd and 3rd in the 800. Howard Long and Morgan-Lee then braved the elements in the steeple chase. Morgan-Lee showing he'd not lost any of his renowned hurdling ability, eased to victory in the final lap, with Long adding a creditable 3rd place in the 'B' string.
The final event pitched Long, Bennett, Morgan-Lee and Tilt together in the 4x400 relay. Southampton triumphed, finishing first by just over half a second to clinch a well deserved second place in the match.
The team are still looking for new members. If you are interested in joining, please contact Derek Warn.

2009 MAY 16: BMAF RELAYS, SUTTON PARK
May 16th, Sutton Park, Birmingham.

We're looking for an A and a B team in the top 10 at the 4 stage relays at Aldershot on Sat 26th September!!
PS well done to the SRC MV50's who yet again successfully completed the National 6 stage earlier in the day, with a 28th place. Apologies for the lack of photos, but I didn't quite get there to see you running! [From Dave Blackman]

    2009 APR 27: SCVAC LEAGUE
Well done, to everyone who turned up in Portsmouth for the 1st vets league match last night, where we finished in 4th place. We had a great time and produced some fine performances. We only failed to fill 3 events in the mens team which is very good, hopefully we can have a full house next time. The ladies team was sadly very thin on the ground. Lynn Massey was our only competitor but still performed at her best. Thanks also to everyone who helped me to organise the team. A good start as a track and field club. [From Derek Warn]

2009 APR 5: SOUTHERN ROAD RELAYS
The 2009 Saucony MK Relays (incorporating the Men's 12- and Women's 6-stage Southern Road Relay Championships). On Sunday 5th April six ladies embarked on the journey to Milton Keynes with their team support in tow (Tony, John, Richie and Ian). The weather was perfect-sunny, slight breeze. The scenic course was a slightly undulating 5.5k. All the ladies ran extremely well finishing an excellent 11th overall in light of the team being plagued with injuries and illness. A big thank you to Karen Rushton, Hannah Coombs, Marie Stokes, Carly Donaldson and Angie Habgood. [From Nicci B]

    2009 APR 5: PARIS MARATHON
Two Southampton club members ran the Paris Marathon on Sunday 5th April (only 2 as far as I know). Here are the results. The first time is the chip time and the second time is the gun time. Nice event but a few too many good standard club runners meant that too many runners were in the way for the first few miles.

2009 APR 5: BOURNEMOUTH BAY RUNS
The Fitness First Bournemouth Bay 1/2 marathon, 10 and 5k, Sunday April 5th is now one of Dorset's most popular running events, although not particularly popular with SRC members. A pleasant sunny day saw 1,288 runners complete the 1/2 marathon and 1,076 opting for the 10k. A few hundred doing the 5k fun run. [From Sidney DeLara]

    2009 MAR 22: MARWELL 10K
Nice sunny day, hilly course. 437 men and 255 women managed to get around. A variety of running styles akin to the natives of Marwell were on show. Some running with the grace of a Gazelle others adopting the donkey plod. Congrats to Mark Campbell finishing 3rd and John Hiley 5th in his first ever 10k. Mens team 4 to score coming 1st. 2009 MAR 21: BMAF CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Following on from Karen's win in the Romsey 5 in January, she has competed in a number of other early season races. These have included 1st Lady in the Lytchett Manor 10 on 15th Feb in a time of 62:17 (13th overall), 1st Lady in the Terminator at Pewsey on 22nd Feb in a time of 1:30:53, and 2nd Lady in the Devizes 10k on 8th March in a time of 38:00 (13th overall). The Lytchett Manor was an impressive performance due to the course being very undulating and race winner Willard Chinhanhu of Poole being restricted to 52:50, much slower than he normally does (48:37 in the 2007 Great South). The Terminator was also a good performance and the nominal 10 mile distance which is often closer to 11 was this year lengthened again to incorporate an additional lung bursting climb. Karen's winning margin was also close to 5 minutes. The Devizes 10k was run on a particularly windy day and it was no disgrace to come 2nd to Amy Chalk from Bristol who finished a fine 26th in the National at Parliament Hill. Karen's times this year put her in the current top 5 in her age group at 5m, 10km and 10m.
All of these races were used as stepping stone towards the BMAF cross country at Ruthin in North Wales on 21st March. After a long trek up the day before and an overnight stay in Wrexham, race day dawned clear but cool with a strong breeze blowing which continued through the day. The ladies race (plus O/70 men) was first off at midday. New vet and former UK steeplechase record holder Tara Krzywicki from Charnwood took the lead immediately with the other favoured runners including Karen settling into their stride behind. At the end of the first lap Karen was running with O/45's Jane Clarke and European indoor 800m, 1,500m (and world record holder), and 3,000m champion Clare Elms, and only a short distance behind O/40 leader Nicki Nealon. The order stayed much the same over the second lap although Karen did overtake O/35 Clare McKittrick also from Charnwood and pulled away from Jane Clarke to finish 6th overall and 2nd in her age group. The race was of an excellent standard and Karen put in a great run to finish where she did. She is now looking forward to the rest of the season and to running even quicker times. [From Peter Costley]

    2009 MAR 15: EXBURY GARDENS 10K
The 2nd running of the Exbury Gardens 10K on Sunday March 15th saw perfect running weather for the field of 304 runners. Yet again the event was very well organised and marshalled by Hardley Running Club. The race was won by former Southampton Running Club member Matt West who now runs for Winchester in a time of 36.07. First 3 men and women home gained a prize, so congrats to Carol Ann Donaldson of SRC, female 3rd (missing 2nd by 3 seconds). [From Sidney DeLara]

A good club performance with the mens team finishing 38th overall (ahead of Winchester) and the ladies finishing 43rd closing a club team for the first time. Conditions were, as expected, very muddy and everyone enjoyed the very special atmosphere associated with the National Cross Country. Well done to everyone who took part and the after run drinkies and curry were well deserved . [From Richie Pearson]

    2009 FEB 1: RYDE 10 MILES
[From Steve Harris 2/2/09] The wind was beating me back, my new trainers were biting my heels and the hill wasn't doing me any favours, but I thought to myself "Yes!! 2 miles down, only 8 more to go...". Bad jokes were my respite to the awful running conditions. In hindsight, at least it didn't snow. That said, there were some strong performances from Nicci Blandford and the ever present Richie Pearson both picking up prizes for their efforts. Hannah Coombs didn't let the weather phase her on the way to running a new PB. Also well done to the other club runners who braved the weather to compete.
[From Richie Pearson 2/2/09] Rarely can a road race have been run in such inclement conditions, with a strong freezing easterly wind blowing sand into the face, along a very exposed Ryde sea front. However some respectable times were achieved despite the conditions in particular by Nicci Blandford and Hannah Coombs both fresh from representating Hampshire in the Inter Counties Cross Country Championships the previous day.

2009 JAN 17: THAMES TOWPATH ULTRA MARATHON
Sam Morton sent the following report on this 50 mile race to Ian Burgess and Malcolm Price:
"I just thought I'd drop you both a line to let you know that I represented the club at the recent Thames Towpath Ultra Marathon (17th January). I'm not sure if this is of any interest to the club as I don't know of anyone else who ran it, and to be honest I kind of missed club training for several months so that I could get the miles in. Anyhow, I managed to finish, sadly I didn't bring any silverware home as the winner completed in 6hrs 12mins which was about twice as quick as I was able but I survived the high attrition rate (123 finished of the 210 entered). Just having an easy couple of weeks to let the swelling go down and the ITB pain to subside and I'll be at training (work permitting). Sam Morton (probably the least present club member at training in the clubs history)."

The Boscombe seafront seems to have its own micro climate. Didn't notice any wind until arrival at the venue, fortunately more of a cross wind, than in the face. A fast time by Willard Chinanhu of Poole Runners, only 7 seconds slower than that achieved by Andy Morgan-Lee of Southampton RC here in 2007. Mat H and Mat M again just missing out on sub 16mins. Well done to David Blackman 1st home in the 40-44 age group and a credible second place F 20-39 for Nikki Blandford. 208 runners finished the course.
